Portal Free: How to Earn It on Steam

Portal is one of the most celebrated puzzle games ever made. Released by Valve in 2007, it tasks players with navigating test chambers using a gun that creates linked portals in walls, floors, and ceilings – a simple mechanic that unfolds into something genuinely mind-bending. Decades after launch, it still holds up as a masterclass in game design, and it remains one of the most searched titles for anyone hunting a portal free path onto their PC library.

Getting Steam Games for Free

The honest answer to whether Portal is currently free on Steam is: no, it is not. Valve has run limited-time free promotions in the past – most famously around the Steam for Mac launch era – but those windows closed long ago. Has Portal ever been free? Yes, briefly, during those official promotions. Is Portal free right now? It is not; it carries a modest price on the Steam store and has done so consistently outside those giveaway periods.

That gap between “I remember it being free” and the current reality sends a lot of people looking for shortcuts. Those shortcuts can be genuinely misleading: sites that label a download as free but deliver something far smaller than the full game, or pages that promise a working copy without any mention of where it actually comes from. Offers that promise paid games for nothing, codes that turn out to be expired, and downloads from unofficial sources all carry real risks to your device and your Steam account. The safe options are straightforward: pay the current sale price on Steam directly, or use a legitimate gift card to cover it.

How to Get Portal for Free?

The cleanest legitimate route is to earn a Steam gift card through Snakzy and spend it on Portal in the official Steam store. You play mobile games inside our app, hit milestones and complete tasks to stack up coins, then redeem those coins for a Steam gift card. That card buys Portal at full value with zero risk to your account or device.

Download Snakzy and browse the available mobile games inside the app.
Play and hit milestones – coins accumulate as you reach in-game goals and complete tasks.
Redeem your coins for a Steam gift card once you have enough saved up.
Apply the gift card to your Steam wallet and purchase Portal from the official store page.

It takes a little patience, but the result is a fully owned, DRM-legitimate copy tied to your Steam account, complete with achievements, cloud saves, and access to free community content like Portal Reloaded – a fan-made follow-up available at no cost directly through Steam once you own the base game.

What About Portal with RTX?

Portal with RTX is a free DLC released by Nvidia that rebuilds the original game with full ray tracing. It is available at no additional charge to anyone who already owns Portal on Steam, making it one of the better reasons to own a legitimate copy rather than look elsewhere. You get the classic experience and the visually overhauled version in one purchase.

How Much Does Portal Cost?

Portal is priced modestly on Steam and drops further during seasonal sales, so the ask is genuinely small. A single Steam gift card earned through Snakzy covers it without any out-of-pocket spend. The portal steam free question has a real, practical answer when you factor in the gift card route: the net cost to you can be nothing. Valve also discounts its own catalogue on a regular rhythm, so an earned gift card that already covers the everyday price will stretch even further during a seasonal sale.

Play Mobile Games & Earn Real Rewards

Snakzy is built around one idea: the time you already spend on mobile games should be worth something. Our app connects you with games worth discovering, tracks your progress, and converts that activity into coins you can exchange for real rewards.

Discover and play a rotating selection of mobile games inside the app.
Earn coins by hitting milestones and completing in-game tasks.
Redeem coins for Steam gift cards, other platform gift cards, or funds for an Eneba wallet you can spend on games and digital content.

Chasing a portal free experience through sketchy downloads is genuinely not worth the trouble – the risks to your data and your accounts outweigh any short-term saving. Earning a Steam gift card through Snakzy gets you there cleanly, with a copy of Portal you actually own. Download Snakzy and start stacking coins toward your next Steam purchase.
