Is The Last of Us Part 2 Free on Steam?

The Last of Us Part II Remastered landed on PC via Steam in 2025, bringing Naughty Dog’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic survival game to an entirely new audience. The Remastered edition is not a simple port: it adds a roguelite No Return mode, enhanced visuals, and DualSense haptic support on compatible controllers. It is one of the most ambitious PC releases from a major console studio in recent memory, which is exactly why so many players are searching for The Last of Us Part 2 free on Steam. The honest answer is that it has never been free there, and understanding why will save you a lot of wasted time.

Getting Steam Games for Free

When you go looking for a free copy of a premium game, what turns up is rarely what it seems. Offers that promise full paid titles for nothing, codes that turn out to be expired, and downloads from unofficial sources all carry real risks: malware hidden inside installers, personal data exposed to bad actors, and accounts permanently banned for using content obtained outside official channels. The Last of Us Part II Remastered is a high-profile release, which makes it a common target for exactly these kinds of misleading offers.

There was also a genuine source of confusion in early 2025 when a free download announcement circulated widely. That announcement was for a free DLC update, not the full game, and many readers understandably came away thinking the base game had gone free. It had not. The original PS4 version of Part II has appeared on PS Plus at various points, but that is a separate console product and does not transfer to your Steam library. The PC Remastered version on Steam is a distinct purchase. The safe way to buy is directly through Steam at its current price, or using legitimate gift cards and codes from Eneba, which feeds into Steam purchases cleanly and without risk.

How to Get The Last of Us Part 2 for Free on Steam?

There is no promotional route that makes The Last of Us Part 2 free on Steam today. The practical free path is earning a Steam gift card through Snakzy and applying it to your Steam purchase, so you own the game legitimately without the money coming out of your own pocket.

Here is how that works in practice:

Download Snakzy and set up your free account.
Browse and play mobile games discovered inside the app.
Earn coins every time you hit milestones or complete in-app tasks.
Redeem your coins for a Steam gift card in the Snakzy rewards section.
Add the gift card balance to your Steam account and buy The Last of Us Part II Remastered from the official Steam store.

This path also answers the question about whether owning the PS4 version gives you a free upgrade to the Remastered PC version on Steam. It does not: Sony has not offered a cross-buy or free upgrade from the console edition to the Steam PC release. The two are sold separately, so the gift card route is just as useful for players who already own Part II on PlayStation and now want it on PC.

Where Can You Play The Last of Us 2?

The Last of Us Part II is available on PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam. The Remastered edition, which includes the No Return roguelite mode and upgraded visuals, is the version available on PS5 and Steam. PS4 owners can play the original release, which has also appeared as part of PS Plus lineups at various times. For PC players, Steam is the main storefront carrying the game.

Is The Last of Us Part 2 Free Roam?

The Last of Us Part II is a linear narrative game and does not include an open-world or traditional free-roam mode. Exploration is woven into its level design, giving players room to scavenge and investigate within each area, but movement follows a directed story path. The No Return mode in the Remastered version adds replayable combat arenas, which offers variety without open-world traversal.
