Sea of Thieves Free on Steam: How to Get It

Sea of Thieves is one of the most distinctive multiplayer adventures on PC, dropping ship crews onto a shared open ocean where every voyage is different. Developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios, it launched in 2018 and has been sailing strong ever since, picking up a PlayStation release and a steady stream of free seasonal updates along the way. If you have been searching for a way to get sea of thieves free on Steam, the honest answer is a little more layered than a single yes or no.

Getting Steam Games for Free

The first thing worth clearing up is that Sea of Thieves is a paid game. It carries a price on Steam, and there is no permanent free-to-play tier. What trips many players up is the difference between the game being free and its seasonal content updates being free. Rare releases major story and world updates at no extra charge to everyone who already owns the game, which is genuinely generous, but it does not make the base game itself free.

When you go looking for a way around that price, what turns up can range from outdated forum posts about historical free-play weekends to offers promising codes or downloads that cost nothing. Codes that turn out expired are a common frustration, and downloads from unofficial sources bring real risks to your account and device that simply are not worth it. The safe path is buying directly from the official Steam store or using legitimate gift cards and wallet funds from Eneba, a digital marketplace where you can find genuine Steam gift cards.

Is Sea of Thieves Free on Steam?

Sea of Thieves is not free on Steam. It is listed as a paid title, and there is currently no standalone free trial or demo available through Steam specifically. The game must be purchased before you can download and play it on PC via Steam.

That said, there is one notable route that comes close to a free trial on PC: PC Game Pass. Microsoft’s subscription service includes Sea of Thieves in its library, so an active Game Pass subscription covers access. If you already subscribe or want to try a new-member offer, that is the most legitimate way to play before committing to an outright purchase. Free play weekends have also appeared historically, where Rare opened the game to all players for a limited window at no charge. These events are announced through official Sea of Thieves and Xbox channels, and they are worth watching for if you want to test the waters.

Is Sea of Thieves Free on Game Pass?

Yes, Sea of Thieves is included with PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Subscribers can download and play the full game at no additional cost for as long as their subscription is active. It is one of the most complete ways to experience the game without a separate purchase, and it covers the base game along with all released seasonal content.

Is Sea of Thieves 100 GB?

Sea of Thieves has grown considerably since launch and currently requires roughly 50 to 60 GB of storage on PC, depending on the platform and any updates applied. It is a large install, so freeing up space before downloading is a sensible step, but it does not reach the 100 GB mark that some players have heard quoted.
