Outer Wilds Free on Steam: Earn It

Outer Wilds is one of the most celebrated games of the past decade: an open-world mystery set inside a solar system trapped in a 22-minute time loop, developed by Mobius Digital and published by Annapurna Interactive. It won the BAFTA Games Award for Best Game in 2020 and dominated countless Game of the Year lists for 2019. If you have been searching for Outer Wilds free on Steam and coming up empty, there is a reason for that, and a genuinely satisfying alternative worth reading about.

Getting Steam Games for Free

Outer Wilds carries a modest price on Steam, and that price rarely drops. Steam does run seasonal sales, and Outer Wilds does appear with a discount from time to time, so patient buyers can save a little by watching for those windows. The Echoes of the Eye DLC, which adds a substantial new chapter to the game, is priced separately and has not typically been bundled into any free promotion alongside the base game.

Outer Wilds has been discounted deeply in storefront promotions, which gave many players their first legitimate copy. That kind of giveaway is not guaranteed to recur on any set schedule, so waiting for another one is not a reliable plan. It is also worth knowing that a freely playable prototype of Outer Wilds exists from 2013, created when the project was still a student game. That original release is an early prototype version of the concept and is a genuinely free, legitimate piece of the game’s history, but it is a very different experience from the 2019 commercial release most people are looking for.

When you go looking for a free copy of the full game, what turns up is not encouraging. Offers promising the paid game for nothing, downloads from unofficial sources, and pages asking for account details or payment information are not worth the risk to your device or your Steam account. The safe path is the official Steam store, or using legitimate gift cards and codes from a trusted source like Eneba, the digital marketplace our rewards connect to.

Was Outer Wilds ever free, and could it happen again?
